The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual nationwide test in Australia that measures students’ basic skills in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation), and numeracy.
It’s administered in:

• NAPLAN Year 3
• NAPLAN Year 5
• NAPLAN Year 7
• NAPLAN Year 9

While Year 6 and Year 8 students don’t sit the test, they are crucial years for reinforcing skills and bridging gaps. These in-between years offer valuable time to strengthen performance before the next assessment year.
NAPLAN is not about passing or failing. Instead, it’s a snapshot of how your child is performing compared to students across the country and, more importantly, a guide to what kind of support or extension they may need next.

Each test area assigns your child a score and places them within a proficiency band. These bands indicate whether a student is:

• Well below the expected level
• Approaching the expected level
• At or above the expected level

A triangle icon on the report shows the national average, allowing you to compare your child’s score with that of peers.

• Students in the bottom two bands may be failing to meet minimum standards. This signals an urgent need for support.
• Students close to the national average might benefit from targeted skill-building to boost long-term performance.
• Students well above average may need enrichment to stay engaged and challenged.
