March Update: NAPLAN & Assessment Season is here – Here’s what really matters!

March often brings the first round of assessments, and with that, a bit of added pressure for students (and parents).

Between class tests, assignments and NAPLAN preparation, it’s normal for kids to feel nervous or unsure. The good news? A calm, supportive approach at home can make a huge difference.

Here are a few simple ways to help your child feel confident and supported during assessment season.

Assessments don’t need to be stressful

Early assessments are designed to check understanding – not define your child’s ability or future. Reminding them that tests are a snapshot, not a judgement, can help take the pressure off.

What parents really need to know about NAPLAN

NAPLAN helps schools understand where students may need extra support. It’s not about ranking children or labelling success or failure. Keeping the focus on effort and learning (not scores) helps reduce anxiety.

Here are some ways you can support your child through early tests:

  • Keep routines steady, sleep, meals and downtime matter more than last-minute cramming
  • Encourage preparation over perfection
  • Let them know it’s okay to feel nervous, confidence grows with practice
  • Celebrate effort, not just results
