JULY 2026 UPDATE: How to Read Your Child’s Report – And What to Do Next
School reports are landing, and with them comes a familiar mix of emotions – pride, relief, concern, and sometimes a bit of confusion about what it all actually means.
Here’s a calmer way to read your child’s report, and how to use it as a starting point rather than a verdict.
Grades tell part of the story – not all of it
In NSW, a “C” or “working at” grade means a student is meeting curriculum expectations. It’s not a warning sign. A shift from one grade to another can reflect many things – a more demanding topic, a harder assessment, or simply a student who’s still building confidence in a particular area. Context matters.
The comments are where the real insight lives
Most parents scan straight to the grade, but the written feedback – especially the “future directions” or “areas for improvement” section – is the most actionable part of any report. That’s the teacher telling you, directly, what will make the biggest difference next term. It’s worth reading carefully.
Start with where you’re going, not where you’ve been
Reports reflect the past. What matters now is what comes next. Term 3 is one of the most important terms of the school year – particularly for students in key years like Year 6, Year 9, and senior secondary. Setting clear, realistic goals now (rather than waiting for the next round of assessments) gives students the best chance of genuine progress.
A plan is more useful than a reaction
Whether your child’s report was everything you hoped for, or flagged some areas to work on, the most helpful thing you can do is turn that feedback into a clear plan – specific skills to strengthen, consistent weekly effort, and support that meets them where they’re at.
At Study Space, we help families translate report feedback into a practical, personalised learning plan. Our 1:1 tutoring and small group programs are built around your child’s actual goals – not a generic curriculum – so every session moves them forward in a way that’s meaningful and measurable.
If your child hasn’t yet tried Study Space, we’re offering a complimentary tutoring session for new families – the perfect way to see how we can help, with no pressure and no commitment.
