FEBRUARY UPDATE: A fresh start: Helping your child settle into the new school term

A new school term can feel like a mix of excitement and nerves, for kids and parents.

The first few weeks are all about settling back in, finding a rhythm, and helping your child feel confident as they ease into the year ahead. Here are a few simple ways to support them during this transition.

Talk about expectations

Have a relaxed chat about the year ahead, what they’re looking forward to, what they’re unsure about, and what they’d like to work on. Progress matters more than perfection.

Time Management

Teaching students how to plan and prioritise tasks to manage their workload effectively.

Focus on the positives

Celebrate effort, not just results. Noticing small wins can go a long way in building confidence early in the term.

Check in often

Ask how school feels, how they’re getting along with their teacher, or how new subjects are going. Sometimes kids just need space to talk things through.

Why the start of term matters?

The early weeks help set the tone for the rest of the year. When routines are in place and kids feel supported, school feels more manageable, and learning feels less stressful.
